Change of The Architectural Function: Barcelona Las Arenas Sample

Fatih Şahin

Abstract

Form-substance interaction in architectural design represents time-dependent change/transformation. Functional approaches are undergoing a dynamic process by their usage characteristics. Although the dynamic effect differs in the space solution, the aim is to increase the popularity of the usage criteria. Shopping centers that are frequently seen to change in certain time series are the ones that urban residents have found to respond to their socio-cultural needs, especially shopping activity. Thanks to the microclimatic environment presented, it is purified from negative external conditions. The construction of different alternative spaces under a single cover causes the usage intensity to increase.

Shopping centers are defined as new faces of urban public spaces. Designed with architectural thematic understanding, these buildings are city symbols, publicity faces and new meeting places. It is in the form of a new small city model where places spreaded in different points of the city can be found together. The design approaches that affect the urban identity positively/negatively with alternative places presented, constantly question the lastingness and integration of urban texture with architectural refusals.

The Las Arenas shopping center located in Barcelona has a cultural, historical value and link between the past and the future. An arena in which bullfighting takes place that experiencing functional change and passing on to the identity of the shopping center, confronts us with the refusal of spatial change/transformation. In the first part of the work, the physical-architectural space analysis is carried out, taking into consideration the spatial qualities presented by Las Arenas and the public space gradation. In the last part, its integration to the city is evaluated through human-space interaction within social space.
