Change of Station Constructions: Ankara YHT Station Sample

Abstract


There are reasons that play an active role in the development of the cities, in the formation of urban public spaces and architectural structures. Historical events, important discoveries, socio-economic developments are among these reasons. Railways, an important development in the history of the world, also brought many effects, development and change. Communication and transportation between cities became easier and faster, thanks to the railways those were in the early 19th century and later entered the process of rapid development and progress. With the stations built together with the construction of the railways, were formed new architectural structures and urban areas.

As the railways are developmental indicator for countries, stations were seen as the gateway to the city and the most important urban public spaces for the city. The symbolic approaches on urban memory and identity that stations have transferred to their users have changed according to their location and social situation depending on their usage characteristics. While the stations have a monumental character with their physical architecture, the social space has transformed the identity of the place that keeps alive the memories of meets and separations.

The Ankara High Speed Train Building has been seen as a symbolic focal point in terms of architectural, functional and social space structure that must be studied critically from the point of view of linking between the past and the future. In the scope of the study, considering the structural and functional changes of the stations over time, examined the offered social space qualities that support the public space quality as well as the physical architecture. In example of Ankara YHT station, has been evaluated urban identity and symbolic structure properties which affects positively/negatively the formation of the collective memory in consist of transportation place.
