Contributions of China Research for Organizational Studies and Management

Abstract

The rise of China as the second largest economy has various repercussions in the academia. Until recently, most of the research on Chinese society, culture and companies were based on Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, but this situation is changing very fast. Mainland China is now a major source of and inspiration for organizational studies and management. It also allows European and American researchers to test whether their claims for universality of certain components of theories, models or frameworks are valid or not. As a validation ground, Mainland China research provides non-Chinese researchers an oppurtunity to question biases and assumptions of the Western European and North American culture and even the managerial science, and of the circles under the influence of these regions. Terms that are the most relevant for such an endeavor would be ethnocentrism, and emic and etic approaches. Also at stake is the discussions on ecological validity in the case of survey data that rely on undergrads only. A number of SSCI journals publish works on organizational studies and management in mainland China and/or originated from mainland China such as ‘Chinese Management Studies’, ‘Chinese Sociological Review’, ‘China Review-An Interdisciplinary Journal on Greater China’, ‘Journal of Contemporary China’, ‘Modern China’, ‘China-An International Journal’, ‘China Quarterly’ etc.. In this paper, we will be presenting and discussing relevant works published on these journals as well as others. The discussion of epistemic implications of such research will be useful for a truly global understanding of organizational studies and management rather than the Western cultural-specific views that are deemed as universal.
