OTC Drug Use with Advantages and Disadvantages

Abstract


OTC drug group, known as the non-prescription medicine, is simply defined as an over-the-counter drug. This group of medicines are medicines that the individual can provide without prescription from the pharmacy in order to provide self-treatment according to his / her own needs without physician control. In recent years, governments have been supporting the introduction of OTC forms of prescription drugs into the market due to various reasons, especially saving money on health spending, which can bring with it many problems. Determining the individual's own health problem and using healty OTC product to achieve healing both helps to reduce health spending and better protects the health status of the individual. However, inaccurate or high doses drug use can lead to serious damage, including death. Misuse of any drug, for a simple disease can cause more serious illnesses. In addition, the OTC product used to mask the symptoms of serious illnesses and delay the individual's right to health care. The use of OTC is thought to be necessary to meet the health needs, especially in countries experiencing difficulties in reaching medicine. But, it is thought that the drugs converted into the OTC category will contribute to the health expenditure, which seems to cause more health expenditure.As a result, the focus of this study is on the prevalence, use, advantages and disadvantages of OTC drugs, one of the most important factors affecting rational drug use.OTC, Non-prescription Medicine, Self Medication
