Post- Coup Turkey in the Arabic Media A Critical Discourse Analysis

Wafa Abu Hatab

Abstract

The   international strategic role of Turkey   could be attributed to its geostrategic location and its economic, political and cultural status. Turkey forms a cultural bridge between the Islamic World and the West as it is located in the middle of four regions, Balkans, Caucasus, Middle East and Gulf and is politically considered a regional and global player . Consequently, Turkey has been always in the spotlight ,therefore, the failed coup attempt in 2016 has received an international attention on many levels that was clearly reflected in several kinds of media.

This study addresses how post-coup Turkey is presented in Arabic media applying a critical discourse analysis  approach that is basically concerned with the relationship between language, power and ideology .Since ideologies are produced and reflected in discourse, the present study  explores how ideologies are enacted through use of language examining  how relationships of dominance  and power are manifested as ''Language is also a medium of domination and social force. It serves to legitimize relations of organized power''. (Habermas 1967,259).

A basic objective of the study is to show, illustrate and analyze how Arabic media views post-coup Turkey and the impact of such views on the conceptions of Turkey's political role regionally and globally. Since language indexes power, the ways in which linguistic forms are manipulated to express power relations will be investigated  in an attempt to find out how Arabic  media is positioning  or being  positioned and how   language is used to position readers examining whose interest are being served.
