The Shift in the Concept of Neighborhood: Case Study in Urban Renewal Areas in Ankara

Abstract


The neighborhood has an important role in the formation of society. Earlier studies define that the neighborhoods are aggregation of dwellings that bind physical, social, political and economic systems. Depending on that important role of the neighborhood in urban environment, development of urban policies should be shaped considering the satisfaction of the residents in these neighborhoods. The neighborhood should be evaluated at national and local criteria, and should be examined in the micro and macro levels. Several studies try to make the explanation of these levels. Mostly, these definitions based on the size of living environment and boundaries of accessible services. The rapid urbanization process and urban renewal policies in Turkey increase mobility of the population living in neighborhoods. The mobility of the population experiencing changes in the level of social organization/disorganization.

This study is a preliminary work of a research that measures the neighborhood satisfaction in urban renewal areas. This study measures the overlap with the theoretical default concept of neighborhood and the understanding of neighborhood in urban renewal areas in Turkey. In this context, a survey will be conducted in urban renewal areas of Turkey’s capital Ankara. Thus, it is intended to measure significant differences or relationships between specified data set means.
