Entities and Disorders: The Criticality of Structure and Dynamics

Yazid Suleiman

Abstract

In this paper, we seek to study the structure of disorders and how this structure is transformed in a constantly dynamic global order. The dynamic nature of modern disorders, catalyzed by technology, makes it more important to get an integrated framework that is able to capture this dynamism in order to gain an understanding of the risks, uncertainties and dangers. Strategic and scenario planning have become key tools for policy makers and strategic planners, but in order for these to be effective tools require an integrated understanding of the structure and dynamics of both the entities and disorders.

To achieve this, we will assess geopolitical and economic disorders and their transformation from regional into global and vice versa, while also analyzing the structure of the entities engaged in the disorders and how their structures are transformed in the face of these disorders.

We then apply this framework to the EU as a an individual entity and as an amalgamation of entities. We seek to gain insight into the ever dynamic state of the union. At times, the union seems unbreakable, with calls and shows of unity and solidarity. At other times, the union seems bound to be broken up by the next day - endless accusations and counter accusations of authoritarianism and sabotage. We aim to understand this duality and what that portends for the future of the EU, in line with the main theme of this congress.
