Abstract

Teaching profession is one of the most important professions due to its great role that plays in raising the future people. Teachers working at all levels certainly have undeniable influence on their students. However, these effects are even more important in the pre-school period, when the child first met with a different community from the home s/he lives. Teachers are both a planner and coordinator of the teaching and learning activities at the school. Therefore, they are one of the most important reference sources in the improvement and development of such activities.

The purpose of this research is to reveal the pre-school teachers' evaluations of pre-school mathematics education. The research group is comprised of 12 pre-school teachers voluntarily participating in the research. All teachers work in formal preschool educational institutions. The research data are obtained with the help of a semi-structured interview form consisting of 10 open-ended questions. Data are analysed using content analysis.

According to some significant results of the research, the participant teachers are aware of the importance of pre-school mathematics education, and they believe that the mathematical skills, and the positive attitude towards mathematics to be earned in this period, can prevent children’s future math concerns. Further, the teachers indicate that the lessons for material development in pre-service education are not very useful to them, and thus they have problems in developing materials related to mathematical skills in this level.
