Effects and Results on the Development Process of Policies For Women's Employment

Nuran Halise Belet

Abstract

The position of women in work  and social life and its improvement is important not only  for society but also for the geographical region where society is involved. Therefore, taking part in the development process and supporting women’s employment is one of the most important issues of the last 50 years. The fact that the countries’ economies are lacking from this perspective or ignoring this perspective causes many problems of socio-economic as well as deeper gender inequality. In this process, increasing the employment rates of women and improving the working conditions in general affects the economic development of the countries positively.

It is seen that women's employment is generally low in the economies of countries compared to men's. Particularly in developing countries, these rates almost correspond to half of the male labor force participation rate. Country examples show that economic structures that can only mobilize half of the potential of the workforce cannot achieve the goal of sustainable development. For development purposes, a larger part of the population, including women's employment, has to participate in the production process.

This study will focus on the socio-economic reasons for low female employment, its effects on the development process and its consequences. Policies for increasing women's employment will be evaluated comparatively with the various country groups, taking the perspectives of developmental structural development into account. In this study, policies and processes for the development of female employment in the European Union (EU), OECD and Turkey will be comparatively evaluated. In this context, policy makers and interested parties aiming at increasing women's employment will be provided with strategies that should be followed.
