Kalecki: A Heterodox Economist

Hüsnü Bilir

Abstract

Michal Kalecki carried on a systematic, novel and illuminating work at about the same time with Keynes. And we might say that Kalecki's works are measure up to Keynes's works in terms of economic methodology and thought. However he didn’t draw attention as Keynes in the history of economic thought. The main reasons of this situation are Keynes was a member of efficient intellectual community and Kalecki’s works had been published in Polish. Therefore the works of Kalecki has stayed in the background until 1970’s. Then later, ironically he’s started to take place in economic literature as a post-Keynesian economists whose analysis traced back to Keynes. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the originality of Kalecki’s works and argue that Kalecki didn’t come into prominence as Keynes because Keynes was well-known economist who has influence and prestige especially in the English-speaking world, while Kalecki is a heterodox economist who had lesser influence and prestige.
