Examining The Effect of Social Adaptation Skills on Drawing Development of Children Who Attend Pre-School Institutions

Abstract


It is thought that children give us information about their own experiences, feelings and thoughts while painting. Children can consciously express themselves in these pictures or unconsciously draw figures. Most specialists use pictures as an assessment tool to have information about the child's personality. This study was conducted to investigate effect of social adaptation skills of children who attend pre-school institution to drawing skills. A total of 46 children aged 5-6 years going to kindergarten, participated in the study. Children were not given any scale. “Social Adjustment and Skill Scale” and “Friend Relations Evaluation Form” was developed by Haluk Yavuzer to learn more about the relationship of the child with his/her friend and “Family Information Form” consisting of 14 questions created by the researchers to get demographic information of children was applied to the teachers. ‘I want you to draw’, ‘I want you to draw school’ and ‘I want to draw anything you want’, the children were given instruction. Twenty four colorful crayons and the size of A3 paper were given to children. Color preferences of children have not been intervened. Children's pictures are interpreted according to the scale obtained. A positive relationship was found between the children's Social Adjustment and Skill Scale and their parents' educational status (p= .006), while a negative relationship was found between the scores of the Friend Relations Evaluation Form and the birth order (p= - .056). In addition, it has been found that boys' as a gender has reduced their likelihood of being in the normal group in their in the skill of using type-scheme, expression and color in their free theme pictures.
