A Study of University Students’ Motivations and Behaviors Towards the Environment

Abstract


The purpose of this study is to examine university students’ motivations and behaviors towards the environment based on different variables and identify the relationship between their motivations and behaviors. The study group consists of a total of 193 undergraduate students studying Child Development at the Faculty of Health Science at Kırıkkale University.  The data has been collected theough the “General Information Form” that was prepared by the researchers, the “Motivation Towards the Environment Scale” that was originally developed by Pelletier et al. (1998) and adapted into Turkish by Sakarya (2010) and the “Environmental Behavior Scale” that was adapted into Turkish by Karatekin (2011). The data thus gathered was analyzed by conducting an analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson Product-Moments Correlation Coefficient and Scheffe multiple comparison test. As a result of the study, a statistically significant difference has been established among the integrated and intrinsic regulation sub-dimension scores of the Motivation Towards the Environment Scale based on the variable of class level and among the introjected regulation sub-dimension scores for the university students who spent most of their lives in rural areas (p<.05). While the students’ class levels failed to establish any significant difference among the sub-dimension scores of the environmental behavior scale, it was observed that the variable ‘longest inhabited settlement’ established a significant difference among the scores for the sub-dimensions of physical protection and individual and societal persuasion (p<.05). Moreover, it was established that there was a statistically significant relationship between the total scores of the Environmental Behavior Scale and the sub-dimensions of the Motivation Towards the Environment Scale.
