An Evaluation of the English Preparatory Program at Istanbul Medeniyet University

Abstract


At Turkish universities, schools of foreign languages provide compulsory and voluntary language education for the college students before they start their programs. This study aims to evaluate the program implemented for the English preparatory classes at Istanbul Medeniyet University, School of Foreign Languages during 2016-2017 academic year when the program was divided into four periods of 7-8 weeks and when the students were instructed in two language levels: A (elementary) and B (pre-intermediate). This study is a mixed-method study consisting of both qualitative and quantitative data. The participants are 154 students in 9 classes and 17 instructors. All the students were asked to evaluate the program regarding the course materials, course contents, testing methods, assignments and the instructors via a questionnaire developed by the researchers. The questionnaire included 52 items concerning the mentioned aspects of the preparatory program and the students were asked to respond to the items by indicating their level of agreement using a five-point Likert scale. Additionally, three of the instructors who had taught all groups in all the four periods during that academic year were interviewed. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed statistically via SPSS 22 software and content analysis was carried out with the data from the interviews. The findings revealed that the participant students were indecisive about the effectiveness of the language program in general. Moreover, it was seen that the mean scores of the female students, the intermediate level students and the ones attending the program voluntarily were higher compared with the males, the elementary level students and the ones attending the program obligatorily.
