POLITICAL IDENTITY AND MUTUAL DEMOCRACY (A Psychological Empirical Assessment

Abstract


This research is based on the fact that elections in Indonesia often end with racial and religious conflict (SARA). The issue of racial and religious tribes increasingly pursed when the candidates of the leaders who were carried are from a particular ethnic (indigenous or non- indigenous) or derived from a particular religion (Islam and Non-Islam). So that identity politics become a source of mismatch in democracy in Indonesia. The purpose of the study: (1) Describing identity politics in Padang City. (2) To describe the fact of maturity of democracy in Padang City. (3) Describe the political relationship of identity and maturity of democracy in Padang City. This research goes into the realm of social psychology, mainly related to conflict theory (Kurt Lewin). The research used a quantitative approach. The population is the people who live in the city of Padang. The sample in this study is the community domiciled in four urban villages in Padang (North, South, East and West Padang). Technique of data collecting with scale of psychology (scale of social conflict) with technique of sampling simple random sampling. Technique of virgin analysis using statistical model of  pearson correlation. The results of this study found: (1) Political identity in the elections in the city of Padang is low. (2) Maturity democracy in Padang society is high. This means that ethnic or racial issues tend not to lead to social conflict. But when the election of leaders related to religion then, it is very potential to cause conflict in the community. (3) There is a significant positive relationship between identity politics and democratic maturity. However, the relationship is only partial. Namely on the dimensions of Islam as the majority religion of society (to-Islami mere) and not on ethnic or ethnic issues. Finally the conflict is distant-approaching when identity politics are not mutually beneficial. Then the conflict becomes closer-approaching when identity politics are mutually beneficial. The conclusion of moderation of Islam has been done by Padang society by not building conflict in general election, because social structure with rational and equality of thinking.
